LIBRARY
CONSERVATION OF PRICELESS ARTWORKS
The Biblioteca Capitolare of Verona possesses a unique collection of precious volumes, estimated at 1,200 manuscripts, 245 incunabula, 2,500 sixteenth-century books, 2,800 seventeenth-century books, and over 70,000 volumes. Part of this collection is available for consultation in the library’s premises, generally under the supervision of staff and volunteers. Yet, no tracking of the volumes or identification of the scholars using the library has been planned.
To prevent theft of priceless volumes, it was proposed to implement a tracking system for both library users and some of the volumes. This would also allow the precise location of the volumes to be identified.

WHY RFID?
By labelling the volumes with special RFID tags, these historical treasures can be kept safe thanks to precise tracking and a detailed history of the consultations of each artifact.
At the same time, to ensure maximum security for the Library’s contents, it is crucial to track user access using RFID badges, allowing only those in possession of these badges to access the designated areas.

The software manages all information traffic, from reading RFID tags to assigning them to individual volumes, and is designed to integrate with the library management system. It also allows the management of badges assigned to individual users with the consequent generation of access authorisations to the premises and permissions to consult volumes.
A possible integration with devices detecting the weight of the volumes could also protect against vandalism, tampering, and theft of parts of the works.
